  25. public domain or not.  Archive sites for ftp are listed where known.

  71. Metafont is a programming language for describing fonts.  It was written
  72. by Donald Knuth and is documented in

  79. A font written in Metafont is actually a computer program which, when run,
  80. will generate a bitmap (`raster') for a given typeface at a given size,
  81. for some particular device.

  83. In order to use a metfont format font, you'll need to have metafont, or
  84. a program such as mf2ps.  See the comp.fonts FAQ for more information.

  89. The American Mathematical Society has adopted TeX, and has had some fonts
  90. designed especially by Herman Zapf.  These are known as the Euler fonts,
  91. and are described below.  The Metafont sources are now available by ftp.
  92.  
  93. NOTE that you should build these using virmf, or at least with a version
  94. of Matafont that does not have cmbase pre-loaded.  You may also get
  95. errors reported when building some of the smaller sizes -- simply press
  96. return.

  99. * AMS Euler -- a calligraphic font.  This is not suitable as it stands for
  100.   text use in TeX, partly because it has a non-standard encoding, and
  101.   parly because it was not designed as a text face.

  269. Computer Modern is Donald Knuth's font family used for his later
  270. `Art of Computer Programming' books.  It contains

  275.     cmss -- computer modern sans serif

  560.     Old English is a language spoken by the Anglo-Saxons in Britain up
  561.     until the first half or so of the 12th century.  It is used to refer
  562.     to fonts used for setting the Old English language.
  563.     The term `Old English' is also used to mean the Black Letter fonts
  564.     used by mediaeval scribes, and called Gothic.  Unfortunately, some
  565.     American typefounding companies use `Gothic' to mean `sans-serif'.
  566.     Both the Anglo-Saxon character sets and the ornamental Black Letter
  567.     fonts are listed here.

  569. Julian Bradfield's font for typesetting Old English in TeX -- this supplies 
  570. extra characters for Computer Modern.  The extra characters are eth, Eth,
  571. Thorn, thorn, yogh, Yogh and Polish ogonek.  There are two styles of thorn,
  572. but I note that there is no wynn.  You may have to create an empty file, or
  573. rename a file -- I forget exactly what I had to do.  Some of these characters
  574. can also be found in the International Phonetic Alphabet font as well, but
  575. Julian's are much more convenient for working with Old English.
